It IS for certain uses, so I'm not saying the flat-brick style is for everyone or every desk. The real sell is that this comes with a super-long cord, which keeps you from having to use extension cords to snake across floors or for temporary setups. It's really hard to find surge protectors with long cords, much less 25' but Amazon is awesome (as always!) and I find myself recommending this to people instead of using a separate extension cord and surge protector. I have a refrigerator, 2 PC's, a 24" LCD monitor, a printer and fan all plugged into this thing and it's delivered solidly for almost a year.
