5.0 out of 5 stars Surge Protectors and Power Strips aren't created equal., July 30, 2011

Personally, I don't feel purchasing surge protectors is an option. I guess we could run around and unplug everything whenever a storm hits, but we're not always at home. Here's the deal. We'd end up buying a power strip anyway. Surge protectors serve the same purpose, but also provide protection from changes in electrical current. In other words, a surge protector can block power surges; a power strip cannot.

I've purchased a few over the years, but this is why I like this model the best:

-- Plug for the wall socket lays flat verses sticking out. Helps in those tight spaces.

-- Twelve outlets. That alone is an OMG feature, but it's how the outlets are laid out. Three are on each side for the bulky plugs with six straight down the middle. Awesome design that's very roomy.

-- Has an eight-foot cord. That's a huge deal for us.

-- Safety covers for the unused outlets. This way, dust can't get in.

On the box, it says the... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars The shocking truth!, July 11, 2011

This Belkin surge protector seems more like an investment and a necessity than a luxury. Sure, there are cheaper surge protectors (more like power strips that claim to protect your equipment), but the Belkin puts its money where its mouth is, so to speak. Belkin will guarantee the safety of your equipment--up to $250,000 for this model. Their warranties have also traditionally been the best in the business.

As an example of their superb customer service, I had to return a wireless router to them, which carried a lifetime warranty, and ended up with the next model up from the one originally purchased. I trust them to do what they say they will do. If this one ever goes out, I can return it as well. Theoretically I don't ever need to buy another wireless router.

Back to the surge protector. I was able to combine two six-plug surge protectors/ power strips into this one single unit that has 12 plugs. This move erased having to plug a power strip into another... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Large and Well Spaced for Transformers, June 22, 2011

This particular surge protector is part of Belkin's Ultimate series and offers improved specifications over their standard line of protectors. The box designates the use as "For Home Theater." The improved specs are shown above and provide a comparison with their standard line which costs considerably less money.

My Belkin has been installed in an important location in my computer room which has a number of transformers that need to be plugged in. As often happens some of these transformers are rather large and seem to hog the available space. Incidentally I do have a Velodyne sub-woofer plugged into this surge protector so I guess there is a little bit of home theater use involved in my application.

I'm happy to report that the Belkin Surge Protector has plenty of room for even the large transformers and was able to accommodate everything that needed a power source in that location. For the first time in too long I actually have unused inputs for both... Read more
